We have not had dinner with Da's parents for some time, so Da suggested that we meet his parents for dinner.
We drove to Da's parents' home and brought them to Hong Kong Street Family Restaurant located at Simpang Bedok. It is located at Eastwood Centre, which is a mixed 4-storey development of residential apartments with retail space. In fact, the famous Renaldo's Apple Strudel & Pastries is also located at Eastwood Centre.
The waitress who attended to us hails from China. However, she has worked in Singapore for some time and she is able to speak some English and Cantonese.
We were undecided what to order and decided to start with a steamed fish, Teochew style. I prefer the Teochew style of steamed fish (as compared to the Hong Kong style) because the Hong Kong style has light sauce added. Also, the Teochew style steamed fish is accompanied by toufu and tomatoes.
As Da's mother is Cantonese, she would always order a soup. This time, she ordered a simple soup with green vegetables and egg. It was light and refreshing.
Next up - the vegetables. We decided to order the broccoli fried with garlic. Broccoli is one of my favourite vegetables. I also like bittergourd and other green leafy vegetables.
Claypot toufu is a dish that my in-laws usually order. Before I started on the "aim for 45 kg" program, I would normally tuck in a dish of claypot toufu with gusto. However, this time, I was more cautious and avoided the gravy which tends to be starchy due to the cornflour.
Da's father wanted to order a meat dish, so we decided to order the venison fried with ginger. If the photograph below is not clear, it is because I leaned across the table and took the photograph of the venison with the camera hovering just above the steamed fish!
If you like Cantonese cuisine in a "no-frills" setting, I would recommend the Hong Kong Street Family Restaurant. My family has eaten at this restaurant before and they too like the food.
