The day after

Yes, it is unfortunately the end of the public holidays. Many of us had to go back to work today after the Chinese New Year public holidays. Some of us happen to work in companies whose bosses are superstitious and they will check the Chinese almanac for an auspicious date to re-open for business - for those of us who are fortunate enough to work in such companies, we may have the luxury of an extra day or two of break before we have to go back to work.

Like many others, Da and I went back to work today. En route to work, we stopped for a quick breakfast at the Indian Muslim coffeeshop located near my office. One of the shop assistants is an old man with a quirky sense of humour. If the cost of the meal came up to, say, S$6.10, he would say "6100". When we remarked on this to him the first time that we ate at this coffeeshop, he said that for some lower income people, S$6.10 is like S$6,100.00 and they can make their meagre income stretch a long way. As such, they tend to look on the positive side of life and see the silver lining in the clouds.

During lunchtime, I went to a shopping mall cum office building located my office, with the intention to buy an electric label printer. However, the shop that sells office stationery was still closed for the Chinese New Year break and would only re-open tomorrow.

In the evening, Da bought dinner from a coffeeshop near his office. In the mornings, this coffeeshops sells various types of fried noodles (eg. rice vermicelli, instant noodles, hor fun, etc) with deep fried ingredients (eg. fish cake, ngoh hiang, egg, etc). In the afternoons and evenings, this coffeeshop sells steamed white rice with a selection of ingredients (popularly known as "mixed rice" in Singapore).

Although the mixed rice ingredients are tasty, typical of mixed rice stalls in Singapore, the ingredients tend to be oily and you feel rather thirsty after the meal, probably due to the inclusion of monosodium glutamate in the cooking process.

Shaloam,
